Lesson 1 · China Trip Mandarin

Getting Out of the Airport

Prepare one hotel card, five Mandarin chunks, and three fallback moves for your first 30 minutes in China.

Situation Brief

Find the Right Door Into the System.

When you first arrive in China, your first stop will often be a major city like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or Chengdu.

These cities are modern, busy, and service-rich. You may see clean airports, fast transport, ride-hailing, mobile payment, delivery apps, and helpful staff. In many ways, things may feel more convenient than you expected.

The challenge is not that China has no solution. The challenge is knowing which solution is the right one, quickly.
Airport System Map First 30 minutes
1 Official Signs

Exit, taxi queue, ride-hailing pickup.

2 Staff or App

Use a screenshot when words move too fast.

3 Hotel Card

Chinese address, phone, nearby landmark.

4 Boundary Choice

Stay polite, confirm, or return to official staff.

Before you react, ask:

  • Who is this person?
  • Does it match the sign, app, or official area?
  • What is the safer next step?

Your task

Get from the arrival hall to your hotel.

You do not need perfect Mandarin. You need a clear plan, a few useful phrases, and something you can show on your phone.

1 Arrival Card

Hotel name, address, phone, and landmark in Chinese.

2 Showable Screenshots

Booking, map, ride pickup point, and license plate.

3 Mandarin Chunks

Short phrases you can say, play, or show.

Play normal speed first. Use slow speed when practicing pronunciation. Highlighting follows the audio timeline. You can also click any Chinese chunk to hear just that part.

Gentle recall

Close the phrase list. Remember the action first.

  1. I need to get to my hotel. What do I show?
  2. I cannot understand. What can I ask them to do?
  3. I ordered a ride. What number do I confirm?
  4. The car plate is different. Do I get in?
  5. Someone offers an unofficial ride. What short phrase do I use?
